Camping at Download isn’t your typical festival camping experience and it’s definitely not a gentle introduction to outdoor living. This is Donington Park transformed into a temporary rock and metal city, where around 75,000 headbangers set up home for a long weekend. Sure, the bands are incredible, but it’s the campsite where you’ll forge friendships that last well beyond the final encore. This is where strangers become mates over shared beers and a mutual appreciation for proper heavy music. Get your camping sorted properly and you’re setting yourself up for one of the best weekends of your year, mess it up and you’ll spend the whole festival seriously questioning why you didn’t just fork out extra on the glamping option! Your tent is your refuge and your pitch is possibly your biggest tactical decision of the entire festival.

Timing Is Everything

The campsites open on Wednesday, two full days before the music kicks off, and everyone who’s been will tell you the same thing: if you can, get there on Wednesday. Not because there’s anything special happening, but because that’s when you can actually choose where you pitch. Rock up Thursday or Friday and you’re taking whatever’s left. That might mean a squeezing in a spot on a slope or so far from the arena, you’ll add another 5000 steps per day just to get to and from base camp (it’ll keep you fit though).

The early arrivals bag the prime real estate, simple as that. By Thursday afternoon, the good spots are gone and you’re left playing camping Tetris in whatever gaps remain. It’s not the end of the world if you arrive late, plenty of people do and have a brilliant time, but your options become significantly more limited.

The Camping Zones: Choose Your Own Adventure

Download divides its campgrounds into colour-coded zones and picking the right one matters to an extent. Some people will claim after the festival that their camp was the party camp and others will camp in the very same zone and claim the opposite. What we’ve determined from this is that it’s not quite the campsite, but your camping neighbours that determine the vibe of your festival. Setting up next to that group of 30 somethings, reliving their early 20’s by doing jagerbombs at 1pm on Wednesday, will likely mean sleepless nights and some idiot falling over your tent. If that’s not your thing, then don’t be afraid to move somewhere else; even on the same campsite moving a couple of hundred yards, can give a completely different experience. With this in mind, some areas are more popular than others, so looking at the festival map, here’s what you need to know about each area.

Black Camp
It is one of the busiest camps on the entire site and typically fills up first. We’re talking people arriving at 6am on Wednesday just to queue to secure a decent spot. It’s well positioned on the west side, close to the village, arena, District X; which explains why everyone wants to be there! The terrain is relatively smooth compared to other camps (apart from the hill leading up to Blue). But here’s the trade-off: it’s LOUD. Properly loud. If you’re a party-goer who wants to be in the thick of it with minimal walking, Black Camp delivers. If you arrive late, even by 4pm Wednesday, expect to get a spot at the back of the camp or potentially need to relocate to different camp nearby.

Blue Camp
This is near the hill area and can serve as a backup when Black fills up. Interestingly, despite being close to the action, it can be just as quiet as quiet camping (which is just next door); though It all depends on your neighbours, really. It’s decent for arena access without being ridiculously far out.

Orange Camp
This camp has earned itself a reputation as a bit of a hidden gem in recent years. It’s sociable without being as wild as Black and Blue camps. It’s also not too far from the arena, which means you won’t be exhausted going to and from base camp and also feels part of the festival atmosphere. It’s that sweet spot for small groups and seasoned campers who want the buzz but also value a bit of sleep and sanity over the weekend.

What To Expect When Camping At Download (Discount Gene Simmons Not Guaranteed)

Red Camp
Download’s party capital. Red Camp is loud, proud and usually one of the first zones to fill up after Black. Expect non-stop energy, late-night drinking, impromptu mosh pits in front of speakers and people still awake when the arena opens. There’s no sleep happening here, it’s pure Download spirit for hardcore partiers and mosh pit veterans. If that’s your scene, Red Camp is your spiritual home,

Purple Camp
Tucked away on the site, It’s often a bit more chill than the other camps and is a good spot for regrouping between days of chaos. You’ll find friendlier mornings here and fewer brutal hangovers, so it’s a solid choice for couples, early risers, or anyone seeking a bit of calm without completely removing themselves from the Download experience.

The Alternatives To Roughing It

If general camping doesn’t appeal or just fancy a different option, then Download offers quite a few alternatives that are worth considering. However, these options are best selected when buying your initial ticket. You can “upgrade” from standard camping ticket to these below, however this usually includes buying the new ticket and then either asking for a refund (which has a deadline) or going through the official resell channels. Which, let’s face it, is a bit of a faff. So make sure you’ve made your choice on these before you’ve bought your ticket. With that out of the way, let’s look at the alternatives to roughing it:

Yellow Camp (Quiet Camping) – Next to Blue Camp and accessible via the West Entrance. The “quiet” designation is meant to provide a more relaxed atmosphere for those who actually want some sleep between festival days. However, keep in mind that “quiet” is relative at a rock festival and your experience will largely depend on your neighbours. It’s a decent option if you value rest but still want to be part of the main camping areas rather than miles away.

Mini Moshers – Squashed in between the Quiet Camping and Blue Camp, this is a dedicated family camping for those bringing at least one child aged under 15. It’s generally more relaxed and makes for the perfect for introducing the next generation to festival life. Yes, you can absolutely bring kids to Download, and Mini Moshers ensures they’re accommodated properly. Just make sure you fill in the application form as spaces are limited.

Camping Plus – Transform your festival experience with facilities that actually work properly! With flushing toilets and showers that don’t make you question humanity, and even has a pamper area if you’re feeling fancy. There’s also a 24-hour reception area, which proves incredibly useful when issues pop up at inconvenient times (which they always do at festivals).

RIP (Rock in Peace) – This represents Download’s premium camping tier. This is the original luxury option with complete with access to The Village, a dedicated 24/7 party zone featuring bars, late-night DJs, and food trucks. Different RIP options include Park Farm and Sleepy Hollow, each with varying amenities. Phone charging stations and lockers for valuables are standard across RIP areas, giving you peace of mind while you’re losing yourself in the mosh pit. Is it worth the extra money? That depends on your budget and priorities, but for many regulars it’s become the only way they’ll do Download.

Eco Camp – Hosted in partnership with Greenpeace, this zone requires participants to pledge responsibility for their gear and waste. It’s more spacious than the main camps, with recycling points throughout and the overall ethos is about enjoying the festival while treading lightly, and it’s genuinely one of the more scenic spots away from the main campsite madness. It sounds peaceful but be aware it backs onto the Doghouse tent, which has stuff going on until 3am!

Campervan Campsite – Accommodating those arriving in campervans through Green Gate. You’ve got dedicated parking and straightforward access to the festival. There’s even a Campervan Plus option with electrical hookups if you want all the home comforts while festival camping. The campervan area is situated in a separate zone, keeping you away from the tent camping chaos whilst still being connected to the festival site.

Any Final Camping Tips?

Sure, here are a few things we’ve learnt over the years. Some of these tips also work at other festivals and campsites, so don’t be shy about using them elsewhere!

Use What3words: Download is an enormous site. Trying to find your tent in a field with 5,000+ other tents in dark is a bit of nightmare, especially after a few drinks! Once you have your pitch, pin your tent location with What3words. It’s a lifesaver when you’re stumbling around guy ropes at 2am.

Space Management: Every inch of space is at a premium on each field, so try and not take too much extra stuff. And for the love of God leave that gazebo behind! The last thing anybody wants is for that thing to take off and come crashing down on some poor soul, minding their own business, half a mile away.

Base Camp: Don’t stress too much about finding the perfect camping spot. You will find that most of the time, you’ll be away enjoying yourself anyway. So treat it like a base camp, it’s a spot for resting, changing and keeping dry if the weather takes a turn.

Pitch Tips: Don’t turn up in a brand new tent without knowing how big it is or how to put it up. Have a practice the evening before leaving for the festival, go down a local park and have a go putting it up and packing it away again. You’ll thank us later if you have to do this in the rain!

Camping At Download: Make It Count

It’s not rocket science: arrive early if possible, set up your tent before drinking, and take time to meet your campsite neighbours. These connections often define your entire festival experience and might lead to friendships that extend well beyond Download. Pace yourself. This isn’t a one-night sprint; it’s a marathon weekend, so burning out on Wednesday night means suffering through the rest of the festival, and that’s a waste of your ticket and your time.
